About flight overbooking

Airlines sometimes sell more tickets than available seats on a flight, this is known as overbooking. If this happens and the flight is full, the airline will offer you an alternative for you to reach your destination.

To help make your journey go smoothly:

  • Check in as soon as it opens, when possible
  • Check your boarding pass and seat number during check-in
  • Arrive at the airport early

Resolve overbooking at the airport

If your flight is overbooked, speak with airline staff at the check-in desk or gate. They are the best people to help you because they have the most up-to-date information. They will:

  • Give you the latest news about your flight
  • Explain what you can do next
  • Book you on another flight or find an alternative solution if you are affected

If you cannot board

If the airline cannot give you a seat, they must help you find a solution. What they may offer depends on the airline’s policies and your passenger rights, which vary by country, airline, and route. These solutions may include:

  • Booking you on the next available flight
  • Offering hotel accommodation if an overnight stay is required
  • Finding a different route to your destination
  • Offering you a suitable compensation or refund

While the airline is responsible for assisting you at the airport and should support you during this situation, if you need further help or feel you are not getting enough support, you can contact our support team. See Contact us for more information.
